The 6th grade unit "We are Different: We are the Same" unites the entire team in learning about the cultures of many countries. In English, students read original folk tales and then write their own. In reading class, students study the culture of China while they read Homesick by Jean Fritz. Research on country maps, facts, and background is done in the library and each research group designs a booklet of information to use when the group "showcases" its country in a presentation to the rest of the class. Presentation time is a full of skits, costumes, music and food.
The 6th grade team also hosts a multi-cultural day on which invited speakers from all the countries come to visit. The students may ask questions and absorb the culture first hand.
